Find YOUR Dream Jobby Annie Por | 1 year ago
It’s been a year and five months since I first started at my current company Imgur, and I am still in the honeymoon phase. There’s a saying that goes “find a job you love and you’ll never work again.” I love this quote because I really feel this way about Imgur. I love the community, the platform, the people who I work with, our company culture, and my job!
My job as a digital sales person includes me having to go out and meet with brands and advertising agencies to discuss potential partnerships to leverage the amazing reach and engagement that Imgur has with the ever elusive millennial males. Because I have been an Imgurian for a while (someone who is part of the Imgur community—yes, it’s a thing!), it was really easy for me to go out there and sell our brand because it’s something that I have been so passionate about for such a long time.
I want to share with you my story of how I was able to land my dream job because I want to empower you all to do the same! I know so many people who are unhappy with their jobs, or are just plain old content and on cruise control—but now is the time to go out and explore and find out what makes you tick and what job will excite you to get up every single morning!
So a little background info on me, prior to getting my job at Imgur, I was doing digital sales for CBS Interactive—specifically selling ads on GameSpot.com to video game advertisers. I loved my time at CBS Interactive—I worked with some really amazing people, was part of a world class organization, and learned so much during my five years there. Things were going really well for me, but at that point in my life, I wanted to be challenged more and work on something that I was super passionate about.
With that goal in mind, I set out to look for my dream job. The first thing I did was write out a list of companies that I wanted to work for and see what was feasible. Companies in my list included Instagram, Facebook, Imgur, Snapchat, and Sanrio (you guys, I love Hello Kitty lol). As you can tell by my list, I’m a pretty big fan of social media platforms! Unfortunately a lot of these companies already had someone who worked on the video game vertical, so there weren’t really any openings that made sense for me.
Imgur was a really interesting company because they were just starting to grow their sales team. I didn’t know if they were hiring or not, but I set my sights on Imgur and decided to do something to get the hiring managers attention! I ended up creating a Confession Bear post to send to the VP of Sales (who I stalked on LinkedIn and found his email by signing up for a sketchy lead site lol)– side note, a confession bear is a meme that Imgurians use when they want to confess something to the community. This is what I sent off, along with my resume—
After I sent this along, the VP of Sales put me in touch with the VP of Talent, and the rest is history! Long story short, my passion for Imgur clearly showed in the way I presented myself, which was in the way of a true Imgurian. My ability to leverage the platform to showcase my knowledge of the site really helped sell me through to the company because they knew that they were hiring someone who really cared and would tell the Imgur story as authentically as possible.
Hopefully my story has inspired you to go out there and find YOUR dream job! If there is a company out there that you’re dying to work for, try to create an opportunity for yourself! Whether it’s reaching out for informational interviews or keeping in touch with folks at the company so you know when openings are available, make your own luck and never give up! If you are truly passionate about something, it will show and be rewarded!
