Can You Be Healed By The Power of Food? The Magic Pill Thinks So…

by Jen Fisch | 1 year ago

I’m a huge proponent of the healing power of food, so I couldn’t wait to watch The Magic Pill on Netflix, a documentary that follows people both in the U.S. and Australia with various health conditions ranging from autism to diabetes being healed by the keto diet. I myself have spent the last 10 years researching ways I could help diminish the destructive impact of my autoimmune diseases with diet as a part of my treatment. So I know the power food can have and was excited to see the subject be explored.

The documentary is from Paleo chef Pete Evans and aims to show that diet plays a huge role in chronic diseases. While Evans himself is Paleo, it was a Ketogenic Diet plan that was used in the film on the various subjects. The Ketogenic Diet, or “Keto” is a high fat, moderate protein, low carb way of eating. When the body is drastically restricted of carbs and sugar and fed healthy fats instead it will go into a state of ketosis, which is very healing for the body.

“Being in a mild state of ketosis is really the place to be,” neurologist David Perlmutter says in the film, adding that fat powers the brain better than carbs do.

The subjects in the film all had dramatic improvements to their respective medical issues when they switched from a Standard American Diet full of processed foods and refined carbs to a Keto way of eating. I wish the film actually followed everyone longer than the 10 weeks shown in the documentary. I know first hand how powerful Keto can be, I have now been Keto for 2 1/2 years and have noticed a huge decrease in the systematic inflammation in my body. For me it has been life changing.

A lot of doctors and researchers agree that Keto can play a large role in the treatment plan for a wide range of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Kris Smith, MD, a top neurosurgeon who specializes in brain tumors at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, “I really think the Ketogenic Diet is going to be…part of that magic bullet, the holy grail of treating people with this disease.”

I would encourage anyone suffering from chronic health issues to look at what they eat and see if a different approach might be beneficial. Whether that is Keto or something like Whole 30, Paleo, Vegan or something else I believe ways of eating that focus on whole foods can be incredibly healing. For the last 2 1/2 years I have followed a Keto lifestyle and I have experienced a dramatic reduction in systematic inflammation in my body, including my gut. I believe gut health is at the root of many diseases and if you can get your gut healthy, you’ll put yourself in a much better position to heal.

There are a lot of resources online to learn more about how Keto is being used to control autoimmune diseases, cancer and more.
