The 2017 NBA All-Star Recap – Fashion Flashback Style By Sheraine

by Sheraine Robinson | 1 year ago

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when someone mentions All-Star Weekend? I asked a couple of my friends and of course, I got the responses I expected to get.

“All-Star Weekend, is pure excitement, besides playoffs it’s my favorite time for basketball.”

“Intense, I always wonder if my predictions are right. “

“What do I think of it?  Everyone’s favorite… the three-point completion and the dunk off, duh.”

Well, for me and I’m sure many other stylists to NBA stars, All-Star Weekend, is single-handedly one of the most stressful yet fun times of our careers. The amount of media coverage that occurs around the weekend is crazy, so not only do you need to look your best, but most importantly your client does. I’ll let you guys in on a little secret, I made the  BIG mistake my first year by not making sure I was prepared. I mean… my client looked great,  and well there I  was walking around looking like a literally had 15 minutes to get ready (which I did). Needless to say, I’m far more prepared this time around.

Preparation for me usually starts a few months before the actual weekend, which usually falls around the same time every year in February. I start by doing my usual research, sourcing and scoping the scene for what’s “popping” in fashion, I then consult with my client, to find out what the do’s and don’ts are and from there its game time. I’ve been blessed with some amazing creative connections that have turned into friends that help make my job that much easier. They are my go to’s, I always consult with them first to see how we could work together, a lot of my favorite looks come from these relationships.

Fittings sometimes take the longest but certainly are the most fun, never too serious or formal. This is the moment where I can see my vision play out, it’s one thing to put an outfit together off the body, but it’s a total different ball game (no pun intended) once its on body. It can give the idea you had, a completely different look and feel. After the fitting, it’s pretty much easy breezy unless we have some unforeseen wardrobe malfunction, which I can say…i’ve never had….nothing I couldn’t manage at least. I have everything prepped and ready so that when its time to get dressed and rush out the door, there are no hiccups. I’m usually on the scene making sure the getting ready process moves as smoothly as possible, there to fasten any buttons and iron out any wrinkles.

From those moments on, it’s usually pretty fun and enjoyable I get to enjoy a new city, experience an unforgettable weekend, my work gets projected into the world, I meet amazing people and make great connections. I’m super excited for this year!

Congrats to Stephen Curry on being selected to his 5th consecutive All-Star Game!
